PlasticsEurope and TEPPFA Launch a Website With News On The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Plastic Pipes Horgen, Switzerland - March 28, 2006 Two European plastics associations, PlasticsEurope and TEPPFA, launch a website with news on the economic and environmental benefits of plastic pipes on March 28, 2006. Plastic pipes are sustainable, economic and durable, and are used in many areas such as water and gas distribution, inside and outside buildings, municipal systems, heating and cable protection. Still, PlasticsEurope and TEPPFA believe that the public are not fully aware of the many advantages of plastic pipes and that less sustainable and more expensive solutions are still being used. They therefore have decided to launch a shared website. From March 28, 2006, the website www.plastic-pipes.com will provide information and insight on plastic pipe systems. It will be a source of instant information about the how, what, where and why of products and industry. The website will also publish the latest developments – new polymers, products, applications, projects, useful case histories, environmental news, EU developments, and business highlights. “This website will provide answers about the features and more importantly the benefits that have prompted the use and application of plastic pipe systems in our ever more environmentally conscious world. Furthermore, it will incorporate a proactive news gathering and distribution service that engages the media and encourages open dialogue on many fronts,” says Roger Smith, President of TEPPFA. The objective of TEPPFA and PlasticsEurope is to provide the facts in this rather complex area in an easily understandable and accessible way: “Plastics are very versatile, embracing thousands of different types of materials and applications. We are helping to spread facts in an important application by setting up and maintaining this website,” says Nancy Russotto, Executive Director of PlasticsEurope. The website has been designed to provide a useful, dynamic and open medium to communicate with many stakeholders such as European institutions, governments, municipal authorities, architects, and developers, building merchants, civil engineers, utility companies and students who want to know more about the role of plastics in this vital sector. The website will be open for access on March 28. 2006 at 15:00 CET: www.plastic-pipes.com FACTS PlasticsEurope "PlasticsEurope represents the plastics manufacturers in Europe. The association has more than 60 member companies, producing over 90% of polymers across the EU's 25 member states plus Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. The plastics chain in Europe - including converters and machinery manufacturers - employs 1.5 million people. The combined turnover of our industry is approximately 160 billion euro per annum. PlasticsEurope operates from six decentralised offices: one in Brussels and five regional centres located in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK." TEPPFA The European Plastic Pipes and Fittings Association, was founded in 1992 to actively work for and represent the interests of European manufacturers of plastic pipes and fittings and their respective national trade associations. More than 150 companies, representing a total of approx. 30.000 employees, are members, either through their national associations or directly. The objectives of TEPPFA are to play an active role in questions relating to the environment and sustainable development and to provide a platform for European representation in the areas of environment, certification and standardisation and promotion of plastic pipe systems. About www.plastic-pipes.com The website will be continually be uploaded with texts and news. It contains information on the different application areas of plastic pipes with interesting cases to illustrate their use and detailed information on why plastic pipes systems are a sustainable choice because of e.g. their long track record, longer durability and low maintenance. Also, the website includes information on the materials used and production of plastic pipes. A weekly news service will be updated with the latest news from the industry. Furthermore a survey can be accessed to measure the awareness and attitudes toward plastic pipe systems offering the user the possibility to win an Ipod Nanos or digital camera. About plastic pipes Plastic pipes were first commercially manufactured in the mid 1950’s to widely replace cast iron and lead pipes and thus provide a reliable and economical supply of clean drinking water. Their consequent use to provide cost effective and modern sewer systems further enhanced public health. Commercial applications were quickly extended to the supply of gas to households and to the building industry for domestic soil and waste systems as well as for radiator and under floor heating purposes. They have also become widely used to protect underground cables and more recently, the fibre optic infrastructure that delivers information technology.
